Beware the Man in The Mask by HollyTheTerrible Beware the Man in The Mask by HollyTheTerrible
Erik and Christine from The Phantom of the Opera, but set in a different timeline...for reasons that it seemed really cool to me one late night.

I hope no one gets angry with me for creating so many AU's lately with these characters.

Art materials used: pencil, ink, markers, colored pencils, acrylic paints and lastly photoshop. It was a BIG drawing and had to be scanned in two segments which were then edited together.

An Artist Note: Several things influenced this one and the other art illustrations soon to follow. Everything from the Elizabethan era (including Guy Fawkes), a certain video game someone kindly gave to me, and Alan Moore's classic V for Vendetta (the masked anarchist who likes to wear a Guy Fawkes mask), also many BBC period pieces that I have watched recently.

And I don't own PotO. Wish I owned Erik's outfit though for I would wear it around the town. :)

Wow...the smoky, swirly cape looks awesome! Very ethereal. And Christine's eyes are so big; it looks like she was crying. :)

Her eyes are so beautifull! In general, Christine looks so fragile and delicate here, I like the contrast between her and Erik with all this blacks and reds.

Erik looks so creepy, and his mask is amazing. And Christine, she is just wow, and her eyes are amazing, and how they look slightly red, she looks as though she has been crying, and I love her expression, the whole thing is just amazing!!

I think this is my favorite thing you've ever done. It's just incredible. Her EYES. They look alive! The subtle reflections in them are just stunning. And I LOVE Erik's Shakespearean mask! This is so neat. Just a beautiful, ethereal technique all around. Love it!

Thank you! Actually, this might be my favorite PotO illustration that I have done. Those eyes were insane to do, but I am proud of how they turned out. Erik's mask was fun. I enjoyed working on his look and someone recently commented that he resembled Rhys Ifans from the film, Anonymous. I haven't seen it yet, but I googled it, and was floored by the resemblance! In the movie Edward De Vere the Earl of Oxford (Rhys Ifans) supposedly wrote Shakespeare's plays. Hmm...now I am getting this image of Erik in the 1600's writing plays to overthrow the nobles and capture the heart of a fair maiden.

This reminds me of the Count of Monte Cristo! And yet there's that Guy Fawkes mask.... I'm getting visions of a V for Vendetta Monte Cristo crossover...

Thank you very much! I'm glad those bits turned out so well, I was working on them for awhile to get them just right. And at first, I was planning on working in a background of some kind, but decided against doing so. I just really like the simple white, I think it helps with showing the movement of the characters better. So I am very happy that you mentioned the movement in your comment. :)

what a perfect Friday treat! This is great, Holly! I LOVE Christine's face and hair. It's so soft and her eyes are amazingly detailed. You really out did yourself there! She looks kinda tired, though, as if she's been through a lot lately ;) I wonder why....
At first I thought Erik's costume was a modern/alternative take on Red Death. Your masks are always so real looking that I forget what he looks like underneath them! lol He has a great darkness and intensity in his eyes and I like that you've given his skin a greenish tint. Can't wait to see more from you!

PS, I love the contrast between these two - Christine always represented in light colors (blond hair, blue eyes, etc) and Erik in darker colors. It is so fitting and symbolic of their personalities and how they are pretty much complete opposites of each other in personality and looks, but yet compliment one another in a way, too. A ying and yang, if you will.

Thank you so much! You are correct, I did try to make Christine look a bit tired/distressed. ;) I spent such a long time creating those eyes of hers. I'm happy that they turned out so well and people like them just as much as I do. This might be my favorite portrait I have done of Christine, though I am doing several more at the moment that also look pretty good. I just really like the emotion here she is displaying.

I agree. That is always what I have loved about these two. Erik as the darkness and Christine as the light. Such a beautiful pair to illustrate. :)
